These guys had shifty eyes, but apparently were not responsible for Irwin's demise.

My submission for the cookbook

Category: Casseroles (I guess)

Recipe: Daddy's Deceptive Meat Tacos
("Seriously, there isn't any rice in it!")

A favorite meal that daddy can usually make all by himself when feeling desperate or vengeful. Feeds a family of four, as long as two of them are little kids that don't eat much, and your dogs don't get to it first.

1 lb ground beef
1 cup water
1 packet taco seasoning
1/4 to 1/2 cup dehydrated Cheese & Broccoli soup mix
Burrito size tortillas
Some cheese
A tomato or two
Maybe some lettuce

Brown hamburger (not by letting it sit out, but by putting it on the stove). Add water, taco seasoning, and soup mix. Bring to simmer, then turn down heat to low. Make kid set the table. Keep warm (the dinner, not the kid) until mama wakes up from afternoon nap and gets herself to the table. Serve on burrito-size tortillas with shredded cheese, diced tomatoes, and maybe lettuce. Deflect questions about ingredients with a mixture of haughtiness, minor annoyance, and deceptive shifty-eyedness. Refuse to discuss the difference between tacos and burritos.

Story (if there is one):
The quote about rice comes from the fact that the cheese & broccoli soup has little flakes of potato in it too, which don't have a chance to rehydrate fully because you add everything to the hamburger and don't use enough water. I guess you can hydrate the soup mix first, if you're a party pooper.

If you choose to rehydrate the soup mix first, use the alternate method:

Brown hamburger in a skillet. In a different pan, add water, taco seasoning, and soup mix. Simmer for 10 min, then add hamburger. Have family sit around table and sing this song to you as you serve food:

Every Party needs a Pooper,
That's why we invited you -
Party Pooper! Party Pooper!

"Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"

20 years ago today.

That last link is from the guy who wrote the speech - amazing.
The Elzes and their guests glanced at each other uneasily. Then one man raised an arm and pointed. “My sister lives twenty miles in that direction,” he said. “I haven’t seen her in more than two decades. Do you think I can get used to that?” Another man spoke. As he walked to work each morning, he explained, a soldier in a guard tower peered down at him through binoculars. “That soldier and I speak the same language. We share the same history. But one of us is a zookeeper and the other is an animal, and I am never certain which is which.”

Our hostess broke in. A gracious woman, Ingeborg Elz had suddenly grown angry. Her face was red. She made a fist with one hand and pounded it into the palm of the other. “If this man Gorbachev is serious with his talk of glasnost and perestroika,” she said, “he can prove it. He can get rid of this wall.”
Homeschooling to teach conservative principles and avoid liberal claptrap

Here's what my boo read yesterday evening:
The crab shrank back in the crack on the rock.
The shrimp swam in the crack.
Smack!
The crab did dash with his shrimp snack.
Yum!

I love it. Nothing about feelings. The crab, engaged in honest labor, free of unnecessary government entanglement, betters his situation through his own efforts. Material gain was obtained through legal application of deadly force. The crab enjoyed the fruits of his labor, free of burdensome taxation or misplaced guilt brought on by the knowledge of a less-fortunate crab on the other side of the stream. No indication that the crab is gay (and we don't care about the sexual orientation of the shrimp). The lesson was not delayed a day so the student could celebrate Mexican Independence Day. We did not celebrate the birthdays of Étienne Pasquier and Georges Marchais, nor supply grief counseling over the anniversary of deaths of Maurice Rouvier or Émile Faguet. (Although due to an oversight on my part, the anniversary of the death of Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland, passed without comment. But we're still covering ancient history, so that tidbit is better presented in a year or two anyway.)

DwerCam

The nefarious Dwerin has managed to evade all the DwerCams. So we're forced to show some old QCam footage from the '80's when he went to Russia.
